Drunk driver plows into California home in the middle of the night, traps slumbering resident who miraculously survives.
If you’ve ever been roughly roused from the dreamy land of Nod, spare a thought for a California gentleman who endured a seriously rude awakening at the weekend.
The poor fellow was fast asleep in bed Saturday at around one in the morning when a car plowed into his home in Riverside, California, pinning him to the bedroom wall and waking him up in the process.
The out-of-control vehicle had smashed clean through a power pole and careered across two front yards, before finally ending up inside the man’s rear bedroom, according to an incident report by the Riverside Fire Department.
Battalion Chief Bruce Vanderhorst told local newspaper The Press-Enterprise that the trapped resident was the only thing standing between the car and the wall.
Responding firefighters managed to free him using the Jaws of Life, a hydraulic rescue tool normally deployed to rescue crash victims from their vehicles. “[He] got very lucky,” Vanderhorst said.
While the man’s injuries were miraculously minor, the damage to his home was anything but. The property is now completely uninhabitable, with damage estimated at $200,000, according to the Fire Department.
Two people were inside the car at the time of the crash, although both made it out before firefighters arrived. They were checked for injuries before being handed over to police.
The driver, 22-year-old Christian Julian Leon, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury. Passenger Andrew Gabriel Carrillo, also 22, was cited on suspicion of public intoxication.
