Central Park “Karen” now facing jail for false report

Woman was filmed in viral video threatening to call police on a Black man who asked her to put a leash on her dog.

A tough month for “Karens” just got a whole lot worse. As stories of bossy middle-aged women continue to dominate the media discourse, one of the most high profile exemplars of the species is being called to account.

Amy Cooper — the notorious Central Park “Karen” who called the police to say a black man was attacking her — is now facing criminal prosecution for it.

Manhattan D.A. Cy Vance Jr. announced on Monday that his office has initiated a prosecution of Cooper for “Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Third Degree.”

Cooper has been issued a court date for October, and Vance added: “I would like to encourage anyone who has been the target of false reporting to contact our Office. We are strongly committed to holding perpetrators of this conduct accountable.”

The incident involving Amy Cooper happened when a black birdwatcher named Christian Cooper (no relation) complained that her dog was off its leash. He stated that this was in violation of a law requiring dogs to be on-leash in Central Park from 9 AM to 9 PM.

Christian Cooper then attempted to entice Amy Cooper’s dog with a treat in what, he said, was an honest effort to force the woman to put her dog back on its leash.

However, the woman’s response, which Christian caught on video, was what sealed her fate as the Central Park Karen. She threatened to call the NYPD and “tell them there’s an African-American man threatening my life.”  And then shed went ahead and did indeed call the police.

The video went viral, and despite Amy Cooper issuing an apology, she was fired from her job at Franklin Templeton, and condemned by millions across America and beyond.

She also briefly lost custody of her rescue dog seen in the video but got it back 10 days later after it was evaluated by a vet and found to be in good health.

If convicted of the false reporting charge — a misdemeanor – Amy Cooper faces a maximum sentence of up to one year in jail.
