Adventure-seeking American woman Aimee Betro has finally been apprehended after attempting to kill a UK businessman for pay.
If it were submitted as a script to a major network, it would no doubt be rejected as beyond the pale.
A middle-aged American woman is facing years in a UK jail after a failed stint as a hired assassin in which she wore a hijab as a disguise while she allegedly tried to off an Asian British businessman.
Aimee Betro, who hails from Wisconsin, was said to have been hired to kill British boutique owner Sikander Ali.
Spoiler: her supposed hitman career didn’t exactly pan out.
The scheme, apparently hatched by Ali’s business rivals, Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nazir, 30, reads like a low-budget crime thriller. Court documents allege the father-son duo recruited Betro to settle a grudge after a 2018 brawl at Ali’s boutique left them with bruised egos, smashed windows, and a thirst for revenge.
Fast forward to September 7, 2019, when Betro reportedly tried to channel her inner assassin in Birmingham. Disguised in a hijab, she allegedly botched the hit and went on the run. Turns out, fleeing across borders wasn’t much of a challenge for her—until Armenian authorities nabbed her in July 2023. Now extradited to the UK, she’s set to face a laundry list of charges, including conspiracy to murder, possession of a firearm with intent, and smuggling ammunition into the country.
Nazir and Aslam weren’t so lucky in evading justice. They were convicted of conspiracy to murder last summer, with Nazir scoring 32 years in prison and Aslam a slightly less daunting 10 years. Apparently, the courtroom didn’t take kindly to their attempt at turning a business spat into a murder-for-hire plot.
Betro’s alleged UK escapades included hopping from one hotel to another in Birmingham, Derby, Brighton, and London, all while keeping a low profile—or trying to, at least. Clearly, she wasn’t the international mastermind her alleged employers hoped for.
Now, after a global game of hide-and-seek, Betro is back on British soil and will make her first court appearance at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court. But remember, folks, even alleged hijab hitwomen are innocent until proven guilty.
The Crown Prosecution Service has urged everyone to zip it about the case to avoid prejudicing her trial. So no gossiping, tweeting, or wild conspiracy theories—at least for now.
As for Betro’s defense strategy? Let’s hope she has something better than “I didn’t do it.” This courtroom drama is shaping up to be one for the books.
