A Connecticut toddler who vanished 25 years ago in a shocking abduction has been found alive and well in Mexico—leaving her stunned father reeling from a miracle reunion he thought would never come.
Andrea Michelle Reyes, now 27, was just 23 months old when she was kidnapped in October 1999 from New Haven by her non-custodial mother, Rosa Tenorio, during a bitter custody battle.
Her desperate father, Edgar Perez, spent decades searching, making repeated trips to Mexico in hopes of finding his little girl—but for 25 years, there was nothing but dead ends.
That all changed when Detective Kealyn Nivakoff of the New Haven Police Department’s Special Victims Unit reopened the case in 2023, determined to find answers in the decades-old disappearance.
Using cutting-edge DNA technology and social media sleuthing, authorities finally tracked Andrea down in Puebla, Mexico. She had been living under a different identity, reportedly unaware of the dramatic circumstances that had led her there.
When Perez received the news, he was overwhelmed with emotion.
“I always believed I would see her again,” he told reporters. “I never gave up hope.”
Andrea’s identity was confirmed through DNA testing conducted by forensic genealogy firm Othram, finally closing a case that had baffled investigators for decades.
The last time Perez saw his daughter, she was a toddler with a head full of dark curls. Now, she’s a grown woman who never knew the truth about her past—until now.
Authorities say Tenorio, the mother, remains at large and is believed to still be in Mexico. A warrant for her arrest remains active in the U.S. on felony custodial interference charges.
For Perez, the nightmare isn’t completely over—his daughter still resides in Mexico, and the process of fully reuniting as a family is complicated.
But after 25 years of searching, one thing is clear—his little girl is alive.
“This proves that miracles exist,” Perez said. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for half my life.”
As the investigation continues, authorities say they are working to bring Tenorio to justice.
