Louisiana groom shoots bride’s suspected lover on their wedding night

A Louisiana couple’s wedding night went with the wrong kind of bang over the weekend when the groom chased his bride on foot along a busy highway and shot a man he suspected of being her lover.

The matrimonial mayhem kicked off Saturday night as the newlyweds and a male friend of the bride were riding together in a car on Interstate 10 after the ceremony, according to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Groom Devin Jose Jones pulled out a gun while confronting his bride and her friend over their alleged relationship, prompting the pair to exit the car and run for their lives, Sheriff Mike Tregre said.

The sight of the gun-toting Jones complete with tuxedo chasing his bride, who was still wearing her dress, reportedly created an alarming sideshow for the many motorists stuck in traffic.

As Jones started shooting at the fleeing pair, he accidentally fired into a bystander’s vehicle, striking a man in the hand, Tregre said. The groom also struck his bride’s alleged lover in the leg as he tried to escape, the sheriff told local newspaper L’Observateur.

Both victims were airlifted to a New Orleans hospital, where they were said to be in stable condition.

The bride only narrowly avoided being shot herself after emergency medical workers who had arrived on the scene barricaded her inside an ambulance. Jones allegedly tried to follow her into the ambulance, but was stopped and arrested moments later, Tregre said.

Jones was hit with a slew of charges, including attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons, aggravated second degree battery and aggravated damage to criminal property.

He was being held without bond Monday, doubtless hoping for at least a refund on the honeymoon.
