Those who take it upon themselves to regulate the conduct of others in the time of Covid had better first make sure their own behavior is beyond reproach.
Sadly, a Florida man who fired shots at a mother and son in a hotel lobby because they weren’t practising social distancing appears the latest to neglect that basic rule.
Douglas Marks, 47, was arrested after he allegedly used a firearm to emphasize his overzealous prescriptions while confronting the woman and her son in the lobby of the Crystal Beach Suites in Miami Beach on Monday evening, according to reports.
Veronica Pena and her son said they first saw Marks in the lobby of the hotel, where they are staying during a trip to Miami Beach from New Mexico.
Marks, a Miami native, is said to have first warned the pair, “You aren’t social distancing,” according to the affidavit, obtained by Local10.com.
He then reportedly ordered them to leave the hotel before pulling out a black firearm which he shot “several” times in the lobby.
No one was injured in the shooting.
A clip filmed by a witness shortly after the crazy episode shows Marks face down on the floor of the lobby being handcuffed by Miami Beach police.
Another witness, who chose to remain anonymous, told the news station that he tried to shield the tourists with his body.
“He tried to shoot the girl and the kid,” the unnamed man said.
Marks confessed to the shooting, but claims he fired his weapon because he was being followed, according to detectives.
He asserts that he asked the hotel front desk to call 911 before “subsequently firing four warning shots,” police said.
Marks faces several charges following the incident, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in public.
He remained in custody Tuesday night at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
