Police in New York City shoot man dead, claim he fired at them first

Details still emerging as officers fatally shoot a man on Thursday lunchtime in Queens.

The New York Police Department has a reputation as one of the most professional as well as one of the most diverse forces in America.

As a result, relative to the mammoth size of the city it patrols, the NYPD usually records a relatively low tally of officer-involved fatal shootings.

However, parts of the Big Apple were on high alert on Thursday after a suspect was fatally shot by officers in Queens.

The exact details of the incident were still unknown as of Thursday afternoon, but authorities say officers with the NYPD Violent Felony Warrants Squad were attempting to apprehend the man on an outstanding warrant connected to a past shooting when shots were fired in the area of 182nd Street and 144th Avenue in Jamaica.

The suspect was shot once in the chest and once in the arm and was rushed in critical condition to Jamaica Hospital, where he later died, according to local CBS News.

Police said that the suspect fired at them first and that he was shot when they returned fire. A gun was recovered at the scene.

Two police officers are being treated for tinnitus at North Short University Hospital in Manhasset.
