Pennsylvania nutrition director finds herself in deep trouble after turning a convenience store cooler into an unlicensed restroom.
The beer cave at a Royal Farms in Hanover, Pennsylvania, is typically where customers go to select their chilled beverages – not where crime scenes unfold. But thanks to Crystal Gauss, it now has a less-than-refreshing story to tell.
According to a police report that reads more like a bizarre comedy script, Gauss, 47, allegedly strutted into the walk-in beer cooler, pushed aside a case of booze, dropped her pants, and relieved herself right there on the shelves. Then, like a scatological Cinderella, she vanished without a trace.
Unfortunately for her, the whole performance was caught on the store’s crystal-clear security footage. The beer cave, as it turns out, is surrounded by glass doors, offering a full, unobstructed view – bad news if you’re trying to make an uninvited deposit.
Police say Gauss pulled off this jaw-dropping act the day before an employee noticed something foul was afoot and called the cops. Surveillance video showed the suspect arriving in an SUV. After tracking the vehicle’s registration, officers connected the dots to Gauss, whose driver’s license photo matched the bathroom bandit in the footage.
It’s unclear what sparked the beer cave breakdown, but the aftermath wasn’t cheap: Royal Farms lost about $80 in merchandise, which is probably more than what they spend cleaning the cooler in a typical fiscal year.
Gauss, who happens to be the Director of Food & Nutrition for the local school district – and presumably knows her way around hygiene guidelines – was arrested and charged with open lewdness, criminal mischief, and disorderly conduct for creating what police delicately described as a “hazardous and physically offensive condition.”
She lives just a mile from the store, suggesting that if this was an emergency, she might’ve just missed her exit.
In the end, Gauss may have left the beer cave a little warmer than she found it – but the real heat is coming from the charges.
