Hands are a useful thing for those routinely thwarted in their quest for a bit of nookie.
But that’s just one reason why there may be even more trying times ahead for a young Virginia man who was apparently so sick of inaction between the sheets that he planned to enact an abhorrent revenge.
Cole Carini allegedly blew his own hand off while trying to make a bomb for a possible attack on “hot cheerleaders,” according to federal prosecutors.
The 23-year-old appeared at the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Virginia, last Wednesday with a hand missing, missing fingers on his opposite hand, and shrapnel wounds to his neck and throat, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Western District of Virginia said in a press release.
Carini tried claiming to a deputy from the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office who showed up to interview him that the horrific injuries were from a nasty lawnmower accident.
However, with the young man having previously been on probation for explosives violations, police refused to buy his story and called in the FBI.
Investigators who went to check Carini’s home discovered that the garden was overgrown with no evidence of any lawnmowing, according to an FBI affidavit.
Instead, they noticed a trail of blood leading from a red minivan in the driveway through into the house and all the way to an upstairs bedroom.
Inside the room, federal agents found more blood, chunks of human flesh, a plastic bottle filled with an explosive substance, and a box of rusty nails for use as shrapnel.
In a shed at his grandmother’s nearby home, they also came across PVC pipes, wires, loose wires, empty chemical containers, extension cables and other bombmaking equipment.
A crumpled note found in the shed described a suicide bomber at a shopping mall about to carry out an attack.
“Even if he died this statement was worth it!” the note read, according to the criminal complaint. “He had . . . of tension that would come and go as he now approached the stage of hot cheerleaders.”
“A dead seriousness sank in as he realized that he was truly passing the point of no return! He decided I will not back down I will not be afraid of the consequences no matter what I will be heroic. I will make a statement like Elliot Rodgers [sic],” it continued, in reference to the 22-year-old killer and self-described “incel” or involuntary celibate.
In May 2014, Elliot Rodger killed six people and injured 14 others near the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara before killing himself.
He left behind a manifesto often cited by other online “incels” who claim their experience of sexual rejection justifies taking revenge upon women.
Carini has been charged with lying to the FBI about the cause of his injuries and whether he possessed explosives. He is being held at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
His mother told the Daily Beast that her son “needs help” and that she’s “willing to work with him.”
