A young man from Utah failed to heed the warning signs after being seriously injured by a big hulking bison.
In early 2019, Kyler Bourgeous was gored by a bison. It happened at the Antelope Island State Park in Utah. He had reached the summit of the park’s highest point – a trail he knew well – when he saw two bison as he came over the ridge.
Alas, he just couldn’t get away in time. The bison’s horns gored his hip and armpit, fracturing a rib which then collapsed his lung. The animal then trampled him and kicked his head.
So you would think Bourgeous would have decided to steer clear of that park and those animals.
But no. The intrepid (and some would say foolhardy) 30-year-old brought a date to the same trail just a few months later with plans to watch the sunset.
But the young woman, Kayleigh Davis, ran a little ahead, and she ended up alone with a bison, who charged and flipped her into the air. She sustained a broken ankle from the goring and a leg wound. The 22-year-old was airlifted to hospital in Ogden, Utah.
She said that she has talked with a park ranger about possibly volunteering at the visitors centre, but “it might take a minute” before she’s fully ready for that.
You can’t make this kind of stuff up! At least both are still alive to tell the tale. There are no wedding plans that we know of but the bonding power of bison wounds must be pretty unique.
